Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Anglesey Abbey was once owned by horse trader Thomas Hobson, who was renowned for offering his customers only one type of horse – the one nearest the stable doors. Ever since, the choice of taking what is offered or nothing at all has been referred to as ‘Hobson’s Choice’. Augustine monks set up home at Anglesey Abbey in the 12th century but were forced to pack their bags 400 years later by Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Thankfully the abbey didn’t fall into ruin; instead, it was lovingly transformed into a country house. The horse connection continued in 1926, when brothers Huttleston and Henry Broughton took over the reins. Both men were passionate about the Sport of Kings and were delighted that the house was so close to Newmarket racecourse. It is perhaps not surprising, then, that visitors will notice something of an equine theme at the Abbey, with a magnificent display cabinet of cups and trophies from horse racing displayed in the Upper Gallery of the house. Today it also boasts an outstanding art collection, including two masterpieces by Claude Lorraine – a French landscape artist from the Baroque era. His works hang in the lower gallery of the house, where visitors can also find some elegant antique furniture from China and a 100-year-old Steinway grand piano. Outside in the 98 acres of landscaped and wildlife gardens there is a working 18th century water mill. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey

“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
