Rushton Triangular Lodge

“A short drive away from Rushton, along a solitary country lane, is the extraordinary and aptly named, Rushton Triangular Lodge. The lodge, built more for artistic expression than practicality, is flamboyantly festooned with dates, religious emblems, biblical verses and skilfully carved gargoyles. It was designed and built in the late 16th century by Sir Thomas Tresham, who was a staunch Catholic. His refusal to convert to Protestantism during the Reformation resulted in a total of fifteen years imprisonment. He designed and built the house upon his release from prison, and it was completed in 1597 and is said to have been a ‘secret’ proclamation of his faith. Tresham’s belief in the Holy Trinity is evident throughout this house. It is also, perhaps a pun on his name – his wife was known to call him ‘Good Tres’. In addition to the three walls, the building has three floors, each with three windows, three roof gables and a three-sided chimney. The three walls, each adorned with three gargoyles, are said to be exactly 33 feet long - the age at which Christ is said to have died. The main rooms inside the house are hexagonal, leaving the 3 corner spaces triangular too. There is a spiral staircase ascending one of the corners and the other 2 are small rooms. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
