Peveril Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Perched on a hill above the town of Castleton, and providing glorious views of the Derbyshire Peak District, are the ruins of Peveril Castle. William Peveril, thought to be the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror, built the castle in around 1080. It was one of the first Norman castles in the country and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. During its 1000 year history the castle is said to have been visited by 4 kings – Henry II, Henry III, Edward III and Malcolm IV, King of Scotland. This host residence to royalty was also the inspiration of Sir Walter Raleigh Scott’s novel, ‘Peveril of the Peak’. A novel whose inspiration is said to be the “Popish Plot”, when Jesuits were said to be planning the assassination of Charles II, in order to bring his Roman Catholic brother to the throne. The steep climb to the castle leads you through a 12th century gatehouse, inside a curtain wall. Embedded within the wall are Roman tiles that were probably scavenged from a Roman fort, found in a nearby town. The ruins of the castle keep are what dominate the site today. The grit stone walls were about 60 feet high, and at least two of these are still standing. The walk up to the castle is definitely worth it, if only just for the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside! ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
