Lincoln Medieval Bishop’s Palace

| PLAY AUDIO |
“A stone’s throw from Lincoln Cathedral, the bishop’s palace was the administrative centre of the largest diocese in medieval England for over 800 years. Although the palace lies in the shadow of the 11th century Lincoln cathedral, it is no less spectacular. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, it was decided that centre of the largest diocese in Medieval England, stretching from the Humber to the Thames, should be relocated to the thriving town of Lincoln. As part of a major building programme instigated by William the Conqueror, a castle and cathedral were constructed in Lincoln. During this time, the Bishops of Lincoln grew in power and influence and came to own a number of residences throughout the diocese. But it wasn’t until the late 12th century, that the King granted this site specifically for the building of a new bishop’s palace, from which the bishops conducted their duties. It was one of the first buildings to be built in the new Gothic, or ‘French’ style. Having hosted royal visits from Henry VIII and James I, the palace was later used as a prison during the civil wars, and was ransacked, set on fire and badly damaged. Following the Restoration, the Palace was recovered by the diocese and was leased as residential lodgings. In the late 19th century, parts of the palace were used as bishops’ residences again until 1945. Built on hillside terraces, commanding beautiful views of the surrounding area, the grandeur of the palace ruins still evoke the power and influence of the medieval church. ”
