Lincoln Castle

“Dominating the Lincolnshire skyline, this majestic castle is home to one of the 4 original copies of the Magna Carta - the most important document in England – laying out the nation’s founding principles of democracy and civil rights. The castle was built on a site dating back to AD60, when it was a simple Roman fort. After his victory at the battle of Hastings in 1066, this was one of the first Norman castles to be built by William the Conqueror. According to the Domesday Book, 166 Saxon homes had to be cleared just to create enough space for this grand monument. To add insult to injury the inhabitants were forced to provide labour for the great undertaking too! The castle, unusually, has two mottes and a full circuit of curtain wall, most of which remain and can be walked around. The building has been in use for 900 years, and, as well as a fortress it has also been used as a prison and a court. The court is still in use and the old prisons are open to visitors. The world’s only remaining “Pentonville System” chapel is found within the prisons. Here the prisoners were kept in separate cells, to continuously remind them of their fate and stop them from seeing one another. Many prisoners were executed and buried within the castle. Several sightings of two ghostly figures have apparently taken place on the stairs up to the Observatory Tower. It is also said there is sometimes a cold presence that can be felt there. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
