Eyam Hall

“In the middle of the historic and heroic plague village of Eyam lies Eyam Hall. The villagers here went into voluntary quarantine when the bubonic plague arrived from London in 1665. It had been carried by infected fleas living in bales of cloth. Rectors William Monpesson and Thomas Stanley convinced the townsfolk to bury their own dead, and not to have gatherings, to minimise the disease spreading. Between September 1665 and October 1666 at least 76 families were stricken and up to a third of the population suffered a terrible death. In some cases there would be just one single member of a family left alive. The plague left about 400 survivors who needed to make their living - so they resumed mining on the nearby hills. Eyam Hall is on the main street of the village and was built shortly after the plague left. It has remained pretty much unaltered since it was completed. The main rooms, three of which are said to be haunted, have furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Flemish tapestries, family portraits, costumes, china and glass are among the artefacts on display. The farmyard has a crafts centre, a Buttery for light bites and a gift shop selling local produce. Having survived the ravages of the Plague, the village is well preserved and is well worth a walk round. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey

“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
