“Canons Ashby House has remained virtually unchanged for three hundred years. It was built by the Elizabethans and the intimate rooms include wall paintings from the era as well as Jacobean plasterwork. In the 20th century, the house became a pioneer property for the National Trust as it was the first stately home restored using government money, instead of the traditional family donation. Outside are lawns dotted about with well maintained topiary (or hedges). The old orchard has and pears, plums and apples amongst its wonderfully old fruit trees which dating back to the 18th century. Within the grounds is St Mary’s church. This is the only reminder of the 12th century Augustan priory which once occupied the site and gave the house its name. There are also sheep and cattle. Visitors are encouraged to be on their guard as sometimes the animals can be a little boisterous! ”

Sam, Manchester
