“Bolsover castle stands on a wooded hill, its semi-ruined silhouette standing proud against the heights of the Peak District. Legend has it that the devil once visited Bolsover Castle to see the blacksmith, who was the best around. The devil ordered him to fit metal shoes to his hooves. The blacksmith obliged and is said to have driven a nail into the soft part of the devil’s hoof. This hurt the devil so much that he fled through the countryside, squirming and kicking to try to get it out. In the chaos the church of Chesterfield is rumoured to have got in the way of one of his kicks and this explains the church’s twisted spires! The original castle was built in the 17th century and was refurbished twice by the Cavendish family. Outside Bolsover looks like a fortress, ready for battle. Inside, the rich panelling, painted ceilings, elaborate fireplaces and indoor riding school show it was also a luxurious country home. The gardens have been restored, along with the castle battlements and the fountain. Statues stand guard over the grounds, which are open to the public along with the house. ”

Sam, Manchester
