“Belton is the quintessential English country house. Fans of Jane Austen may recognise it from the BBC television version of Pride and Prejudice, in which Colin Firth played that inimitable heartthrob, Mr Darcy. The estate was bought in the late 16th century by the Brownlow and Cust family. Eighty or so years later the house was designed and built by architect William Winde. With it came formal gardens, sculptured parkland, stunning water features and ornamental flower beds. Although little of the original landscaping remains, you can still find the “Orangery” and “Italian gardens”, modifications of which were designed by the English architect and landscaper James Wyatville. The house is built with H-shape symmetry which complements the broad flight of stairs leading to the main entrance. Inside, it boasts a fine collection of porcelain and silver and an impressive array of Regency furniture. You can also see the “Queens bedroom” where Queen Adelaide stayed in the mid nineteenth century. Today the estate is run by the National Trust and includes a large adventure playground for children. ”

Sam, Manchester
