Battle of Bosworth

| PLAY AUDIO |
“The Battle of Bosworth field, fought on 22nd August 1485 was a turning point in British history, marking the end of the War of the Roses and the establishment of the Tudor dynasty, which was to last for 118 years. Although only two hours long, the Battle resulted in the death of Richard III and the crowning of Henry Tudor as Henry VII, thus making Richard the last English king to die on the battlefield and only one of two kings since 1066 not to have a permanent and accredited tomb. With between 8 and 12,000 men commanded by the Duke of Norfolk, compared to Henry’s 4,000 men under the Earl of Oxford, Richard had the stronger army. He appeared to gain an early advantage and got close to Henry, killing his standard-bearer. However, his commander had also been killed, leaving his troops leaderless. He was then let down, firstly by Lord Stanley who betrayed him by fighting for Henry, then by the Duke of Northumberland delaying, or refusing to come to his aid. Though Richard fought bravely, he was killed and Henry was crowned on the battlefield - the legend being that the crown was found on a thorn tree, resulting in the association of the thorn with the Tudor crown. The battle is celebrated in Shakespeare’s play Richard III, in which the famous line: ‘A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse’ appears. ”
