“The impressive ruined castle of Ashby de la Zouche was the inspiration for many of the scenes in Sir Walter Scott’s tale ‘Ivanhoe’. It was built in the fifteenth century, and since then it has played host to many royal visitors including Henry VII, Mary Queen of Scots, James I and Charles I. It's just possible that Charles I may have made use of an underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, created during the English civil war. Today the passage is open to whoever may venture in and gives a taste of what it was like to be under siege. The Hastings Tower looks out over the ‘wilderness’ of the grounds. From here you get a superb view of the surrounding countryside, including the undulating landscape of the National Forest. The castle grounds are great for walking and exploring and are perfect for picnics. Who knows, you may end up at a spot where the royals themselves whiled away a sunny afternoon hundreds of years ago. ”

Sam, Manchester
